In May 2002, the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans announced a preliminary conservation strategy for rebuilding Pacific inshore Rockfish stocks. One of the key elements of the strategy included the development of a network of closed areas coastwide. This will allow the animals residing within the closed area to maintain a high level of productivity and thereby supply larvae for other depleted areas. Due to the sedentary nature of the Rockfish and their tendency to be long-lived, the closed areas will be in effect for many years, i.e. (20-25 years). Monitoring programs will measure the success of the closed area element of the strategy over time.

RCA boundary legal descriptions updates
- Description
-
RCA boundary legal descriptions in the form of latitude and longitude coordinate positions were developed by DFO Fisheries Management Branch by extracting coordinate values from CHS raster marine charts. Coordinate values were then input into a GIS by DFO Habitat and Enhancement Branch GIS Unit. RCA boundary files were developed using the coordinate positions and small sections of vector CHS marine charts. The final files were output as ESRI shapefiles. Additional Rockfish Conservation Areas were identified for April-May 2005. These RCAs were digitized and appended to the existing dataset.
